PRESIDENT OF SOMALIA

FROM THE PRESIDENT.
The City of Mogadishu plays a pivotal role in Somalia’s economy and holds significant potential for driving national growth. However, its development has been hindered for decades by a lack of physical infrastructure. To address this, the New Mogadishu Development Corporation (NMDC) has been established with a clear mandate to lead investment in the city’s infrastructure.
With Mogadishu’s population nearing four million and growing rapidly, the focus on high-impact economic initiatives is expected to boost trade, business activity, and job creation. A thriving Mogadishu is vital for Somalia’s progress toward sustainable development and prosperity.
Given the magnitude of required investments, NMDC’s collaboration with private investors—many of whom are Somali citizens—will be crucial in mobilizing resources and achieving a positive financial return while advancing national goals.
Mogadishu holds immense promise, and through collective efforts, it can become a beacon of progress and opportunity for all. Together, we can build a brighter future for Somalia.

The NMDC is a key part of the Somali government’s broader strategy to implement Nationally Important Infrastructure Projects (NIIPs). The Corporation will unite industry experts, public and private sector stakeholders to deliver transformative projects in line with three primary goals:
-
Advancing Key Infrastructure Projects: NMDC prioritizes developing economic zones, modernizing the International Airport, and enhancing the Seaport, which is vital for Somalia’s trade and economic activities. These projects will create skilled jobs and significantly impact millions of Somalis’ lives.
-
Stimulating Private Investment: By taking calculated risks, NMDC aims to encourage private sector participation in developing infrastructure, housing, and financial markets. Acting as a cornerstone investor, NMDC will remove barriers, generate returns, and attract private capital.
-
Enhancing Community Infrastructure: The Corporation will support integrated infrastructure development, including schools, hospitals, and recreational facilities, ensuring local communities benefit from emerging employment opportunities.
